Winners!

The wait is over, everyone! Here are the results for the Unova State of Mind contest!
We had so many lovely pictures that we had a hard time deciding who should be in the top three! Pretty much every picture deserves recognition for the creativity, skill and effort put in so we encourage you all to check them out!

In Third Place

by *Plush-Fiend
We loved how the city scene looks like a collage made from clippings of a trendy fashion magazine! It's charming, colorful, and we liked the little story that came with it!

In Second Place

by ~Blizzardpaw
We liked how this is not a cityscape, but a scene that that gives you a clip of the Pokemon city life without losing the city element! Not to mention, we thought the joke was great!

:star: In First Place :star:

by ~Moutakcoyo-Suhirro
The colors and the dynamic composition of this piece is a creative way of capturing the energy of the big city! The triple battle is also a great way of celebrating the new generation in more ways than just Pokemon in a new location! Overall, we think its a wonderful piece that's more than deserving of first place! Congrats!

This piece was so close to being in the top three that we felt we had to showcase it!
Honorable Mention

by ~Paleona
We loved the pastel colors and the cheery tone that reminded us so much of Nimbasa City!

Thanks everyone for participating! We hope to have more contests like this one in the future!

Are you ready?

Hey everyone!
Welcome new members!

:star::star::star:

The Black and White release is just around the corner! Are you getting in the "Unova state of mind"?

So what's the contest about?
We want to see your trainers and Pokemon in the city! They can be dressed to impress on Poke-Fashion Avenue or battling it out in the subways; be creative!

:bulletred:The entries should show Pokemon and/or a Pokemon trainer you designed (yourself as a trainer, your character, etc.) in a visible city environment. Not just any Unova location! In fact, the city doesn't technically have to be a location in Unova; it could be New York City, Chicago, Tokyo, Moscow... As long as it's noticeably a city!

:bulletred: There should be a big focus on fifth generation Pokemon! You may include one of the previous generation Pokemon (for example, a sidekick that's following you) but no more.

:bulletred: Entries will be judged on creativity!  Don't be afraid to explore fashion and urban art forms in your entry. Have fun and show style and thought in your visuals!

:bulletred:  For this contest, we're allowing any kind of visual entry! Photography, sculpture, or any other visual medium is great. Just remember that it's the most creative entry that wins!

If you have any other questions, please ask in the comments or in a note to the club!  ^^

Only one entry per person. The piece must be created for the contest, we will check the time of the upload!

Deadline: Monday, March 21st 2011

The winners were chosen based on creativity and relevance to city theme. Due to the number of entries we felt were a creative take on the theme, most of the entries were nominated, but these were the entries with the highest number of votes. If you don't understand why we chose the entries we did, or you would like a better explanation, we recommend noting the club with all of your concerns.

If you are reacting because you expected your entry to be acknowledged, it may please you to know that your entry was indeed nominated. The reason we ultimately decided against the winning vote is because we felt it the city theme wasn't important to the picture, and it would be equally effective if it took place outside of a city.

^^ Cool, a lengthy reply. And mine was nominated? Truthfully, I have very low opinion of my own art, although I do have to say I'm happy with the theme.

My observation was just that, an observation. If you look at all the top ones, they are full color, gradient, strong lines, great art styles. Of course, they are all individual too and deserve to be up there.

One I was disappointed not to see was the darker, magicy looking one with the pidoves and the big, night city in the background. Now that one was truly amazing!!!

(And by the by, the battle scene that won first place could receive the same comment, that the city part wasn't important and it could effectively taken place outside of a city. Not complaining, just saying... (Another by the by, part of the reason mine does go that route, is to show that many cities are very uncaring. He wasn't approached once by the denizens of said city and only his Litwick was there for him in his last moments of life. I wanted to show that even though there were other living things nearby, they showed no care whatsoever with what was going on a mere ten to twenty feet away.))

And that long paragraph just above is why I rate my skills as an author twenty times higher then my skills as an artist. ^^

Yours was indeed nominated. The person that nominated it found it to be a touching piece, however there was a big issue in that for days after you submitted it the staff wasn't even sure if you meant to submit your entry to the contest because we couldn't see the theme in it, which is why it wasn't accepted for so long. ^^; While the city reference makes sense when you explain it to us, this was a visual contest, and to be honest, we simply didn't see the city in your piece visually or conceptually... This is not to say that it wasn't there, but as the artist it is your responsibility to establish that in the visuals, if that makes sense? At any rate, you should be proud, as you gave it a valiant effort and did you get nominated after all, even despite that. :)

All of the entries showcased did end up being ones with bright colors, however I'd afraid that's due to coincidence and not conscious judging criteria. The entry you are referring to ([link] this one, I believe?) was certainly nominated as well. It's a lovely piece and was definitely skillfully made, but the precise reason we didn't go with that one is that we felt the others who did make the top three used the city theme more creatively. In the context of your first comment, I'm a little surprised that you were disappointed not to see it up there!

It's true that you could make a picture about a triple battle take place anywhere, however we felt the modern/urban style of the piece was well utilized with the theme, and the city was very much a part of the picture. It pulled the whole piece together.

Ah, I see ^^ I'm glad it got entered, though. I basically just did a kinda alley way, not too good at drawing.

As an artist? Pfft! I'm an author! ;p The reason it wasn't visually there is cuz I suck at art! The drawing was a nice practice piece for my Tablet though, as I had just gotten it. I wonder if I should write a story for the comic... Seems like it would come out much better. I love being descriptive. Maybe something along the lines of:

'The sun was still in the sky, although it was well after noon. The city bustled in the afternoon traffic, but the back alleys were more sedated. in one sat a young man. By his clothing he was a trainer, only confirmed by the Litwick at his side. Few people and pokemon passed by in this area and none gave so much as a passing glance, far too occupied in their own lives and woes, though none may have been on the same level as his. Lifting his head slowly and opening his slightly teary eyes he was greeted with the site of blood. It had covered his hands like paint, thick, cloying, and definitely hard to get rid of.'

And for the piece (which is the one I'm thinking of) I really liked it due to the fact that it gave off a dark magic type feel. The clothing and appearance of the two is reflected very well by the city in the background, and in the pokemon choice for the picture. I thought it was a very nice pic because it gave a sense of anticipation of what would happen in the city. Any number of possibilities that could befall them and the fame they would get for coming to such a place.
